TUNED OUT/LEFT BEHIND

"I can't be zoned out
if I was never 'in'"
is the joke I make
as I stare at the posters on the walls,
the damaged ceiling tile,
the things that don't change

In a room like this 
I can't hear you,
can't see your face
as you talk about your everyday life
I'm not in the conversation

I only catch the shape of sound,
a breath of what I know
enough to recognise,
too much to understand
